About Aura Deer

In honor of my idol, Steve Jobs, whose wisdom ignited a spark within me and became the foundation of Aura Deer. His passing in 2011, while Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind” played, prompted deep reflection. His question, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I’m about to do today?” inspired me to seek change.

Turning to nature, I discovered energy and authenticity in forests, lakes, and oceans. My journey spanned Nepal, Tibet, Xinjiang, Gansu...where the Buddhist murals at the Mogao Caves and Thangka art in Tibet profoundly inspired me. These experiences enriched my life and guided me toward mindfulness meditation, helping me overcome anxiety and find inner peace.

This transformation led to the creation of Aura Deer, named after the nine-colored deer, a symbol of the Buddha’s past life representing kindness and compassion. Our mission is to preserve Buddhist culture and art while promoting healing. Each handcrafted product serves as a spiritual amulet, offering blessings for safety and prosperity.

Through Aura Deer, We aim to help you reconnect with nature and themselves, fostering mindfulness and inner peace in modern life.

Preserving Chinese Cultural Heritage
The mural "The Story of Deer King" in Cave 257 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, painted during the Northern Wei Dynasty, tells a Buddhist fable about a nine-colored deer sacrificing itself to save others. This fable originated from the Indian scripture "The Story of Deer King" and was introduced to Dunhuang via the Silk Road, becoming an artistic treasure that integrates Chinese and Western civilizations. In the mural, the nine-colored deer is depicted wearing five colors and standing with its head held high, interpreting the philosophical thought of "good deeds will be rewarded" and warning of the consequences of betrayal. Through the passage of time and the changing light and shadow, this fable of good and evil still questions human nature - when interests collide with conscience, can you hold onto the nine-colored spiritual light in your heart?

Dunhuang Art Language

All the works in our store are inspired by the genuine murals of the Mogao Caves. The cave paintings have been passed down for thousands of years along the Silk Road, and are recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. They embody the Zen of the Buddha's flower gesture and the dust of the Sogdian caravans. Each piece is a cultural messenger transcending time and space, weaving the colors of the Western Regions and the brushstrokes of the Central Plains into a flowing epic.

Handcrafted with natural materials

These Mogao Grotto-inspired clay plaques are crafted with care for envirronment. Made from natural desert clay and mineral pigments ,just like the 1,600-year-old originals, each piece is sun-dried using traditional methods.
By owning one, you’re not just decorating your space with timeless Silk Road beauty—you’re supporting sustainable artisanship. Plus, every crack in the clay tells an earth-friendly story: nature’s imperfections, honored by hand.

The inheritance of culture and craftsmanship

Inheriting the thousand-year-old cave mural techniques, carefully selecting clay from the clear soil, natural mineral pigments and traditional materials, and going through sixteen processes such as fermenting the clay, shaping with linen cloth, and layering colors, a three-dimensional Dunhuang that can be collected is finally formed. From the texture of the clear soil to the mineral color spectrum, each work is refined with a secondary color fixation process. Once framed, it immediately presents the charm of the desert. With meticulous craftsmanship to restore the texture of the murals, the thousand-year-old Dunhuang comes alive before your eyes!
